The longtime La Jolla home of author and illustrator Theodore Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, has sold for $9 million. Per the San Diego Union-Tribune, the historic estate was purchased by local children's booksellers Ralph and Jodi Bratch, who plan to preserve the property's literary legacy.
Perched atop Mount Soledad in La Jolla, this estate served as Geisel's home for more than four decades. It was here that he wrote 42 of his 68 published books, many from the distinctive 1920s Spanish Revival tower that remains the property's defining feature.
Geisel purchased the property in 1950, acquiring a parcel that included the tower. He later enlisted renowned California architect Thomas L. Shepherd to design a home around the structure, preserving this tower and converting it into his personal office.
The resulting Spanish-Mediterranean-style residence clocks in at roughly 5,000 square feet on 1.51 acres overlooking the Pacific. Today, the home features four bedrooms, four baths, high exposed beam ceilings beneath a classic red terra-cotta roof. There are at least two functional fireplaces throughout the home, a sun-soaked sitting room, and panoramic windows boasting mountain views in nearly every room. Outside, whimsical touches nod to Geisel's creative legacy, including The Cat in the Hat imagery at the front entrance, and the paved backyard features an impressive swimming pool, fitted with a hot tub, perfect for taking in the cool mountain air.
Following Geisel's death in 1991, ownership of the property passed to the University of California, San Diego. The four-parcel estate was listed in 2022 by the Jason Barry Team, marking its first appearance on the market in nearly seven decades. Three undeveloped parcels sold separately in 2025 for a combined $9 million, leaving the historic residence as the final remaining piece of the estate. The home returned to market in January 2026 with a sealed-bid process and an original asking price of $9.95 million.
The property's most significant elements—the tower and Geisel's former office—have both been designated historic resources by the San Diego Historical Resources Board, protecting them from future alteration. With its new owners committed to honoring its past, the home appears poised to remain one of Southern California's most storied literary landmarks.
